A little Owl fact to get started that I picked up at the library when they had a bird display event with the most gorgeous Barn Owl;
Owls have excellent hearing with their ears located at the sides of their head behind their eyes and are covered by the feathers on their face. The “Ear Tufts” visible on some species are not actually ears at all, but simply a beautiful display of feathers.
As promised, here is a DIY Macrame Owl Tutorial which is suitable for beginners as it uses all the basic simple knots that we have been covering over the past few weeks in the series of keychain tutorial. If you haven’t seen these yet, check them out in the Macrame tutorials section. They are easy, step by step patterns and quick to complete which is always a great thing for a confidence boost when your first starting out.
Don’t worry about my plaster in the video, its not a macrame injury! I just had a small burn from the kitchen which is healing perfectly! There are many variations you can do to mix up the style and look of your owl. Materials
- 1 medium/large wooden ring
- Eyes – 2 small wooden rings or keyrings or metal rings
- Eyes/Nose – 3 x wooden beads
- Perch – Stick/wooden dowl/wooden ring
- Body – 8 x 3.5m cotton 3mm cord
- Tufts – 3 x 25cm cotton 3mm cord
- Optional brush to straighten tassel (Any brush is suitable)
MACRAME KNOTS
- Larks Head Knot
- Square Knot
- Alternating Square Knots
- Double Half Hitch Knot
- Cumulative Double Half Hitch Knot
TIPS
Use firm twisted cord if possible as it will help the wings to stay firm in position, otherwise cord can be sprayed with a fabric stiffener.
Remove slack when you tighten your square knots so it looks neat and uniform, especially for the alternating square knots.
Double half hitch tightly and as closely together by pushing them up with you fingers, that way you won’t have any gaps.
Spray or dab water on the tassel after unravelling and oat flat and straight to get an extra straight brush. Give you tassel a pamper and you’ll get great results!
