It’s all about the DNA spiral twist!
This Glass Bowl Air Plant Hanger design is so appealing to me because I love the DNA spiral (otherwise known in macrame language as the half square knot). This design features a really thick spiral suspended from a wrapped ring, with a honeycomb hexagon shape opening – a real eye catcher.
I have to admit that I kind of accidentally stumbled across this design through experimenting with a few ideas I had in my mind to house a glass bowl in a plant hanger. I was mostly concerned about the glass bowl being in the hanger securely with the forward facing tilt feature. I’ve seen a fair few of pictures on Pinterest and Insta that may look nice for an photoshoot but don’t seem practical or secure enough because of how much open space there is the basket for the glass bowl to drop out if tampered with.
So by doing a few larks head knots to join the back to the front, I came up with this beautiful hexagon shaped opening which is just beautiful. I will share with you step by step how to make this beautiful, unique air plant hanger.

Materials
- 1 wooden ring – 3.5cm/1.4inches wide
- 1 x 10cm/4 inch diameter glass bowl
- 5mm twisted cotton cord 830cm / 326.8 inches
- 115cm / 45.2inches to wrap the wooden ring
- 4 x 200cm / 78.7inches as the inner cords (you do not need to waste extra rope on inner cords which are not used to knot as much)
- 1 x 400cm / 157.5inches as the outer working cord (for the beautiful spiral knot)
- 115cm / 45.2inches to make wrapping knot
Macrame Knots
- Half Hitch Knot
- Half square knot
- Square knot
- Wrapping knot
- Larks head knot
TIPS
Knot with relaxed shoulders at a height that is comfortable and once the knot is formed, then tighten up by gently tugging upwards.
Take your time removing any slack so that you can get a really snug fit of your glass bowl in the plant hanger.
