Classic Macramé Plant Hanger with Wooden Beads

The traditional macramé plant holder is a classic for a reason. This simple design is an iconic macrame product that is the easiest thing to refer to when you want to explain to someone what macrame is. It is actually where my hobby for crafting macrame began as I needed somewhere to hang my indoor plants.

The design uses basic macramé knots so if you haven’t tired macramé before, this is a great project for a beginner learning macrame for the first time.

1 wooden ring – 3.5cm/1.4inches wide

Mini Heart Macrame Keychain Pattern

Here is a different heart shaped design I have been meaning to share with you all since the new year, having made many of these little cuties with my Design and Make Students at Belmont Preparatory School for Valentines Day.

This designs plays with Larks Head Knots and shape created by the tightness of the knots. The closer together the larks head knots, the more curvature we see and the straight appearance comes from the knots being spaced further apart.

It can be adapted to a few different sizes, you can even interlock two together if you wanted to in the same design. If you give it a try, let me know what you think.

Although a Larks Head Knot is a beginner level knot, the starting cord attachments that join the two heart halves together is a tricky one to knot. Therefore I could suggest this requires more experience than complete beginners. Please let me know how you find it.

Materials:

Keyring of choice
3mm cotton cord (4.5m)
- 1 x 200cm (working cord)
- 1 x 100cm (wrapping knot)
- 3 x 50cm (inner cords)

Macrame Easter Bunnies

I wanted to share a few macrame Easter Craft Ideas with you, there are lots of ways to make cute little bunnies! These only require a few simple knots suitable for beginners like Larks Head Knots and Square Knots.

Materials:

3mm cotton rope
wooden rings (2cm/3cm or two larger varying sizes)
round wood bead for bunny head

Macrame Meets Christmas Topper!

What is a Christmas Postbox Topper?

Aside from Postbox toppers being a “tea cozy” British Postbox equivilant that pop up over the festive season and to commemorate other special occassions. They essentially a maker’s way of sharing joy and good spirit through their love language – Crafting! They are woven/knitted/crocheted/knotted and take all sorts of shapes and sizes, I consider them very inclusive!

But simply put, they are temporary decorations we get away with popping on the top of Royal Mail Postboxes during the Christmas season (or other occasions) to make the community smile!

Where is it?

Bricket Wood, St Albans now has it’s first Postbox Topper which you can find on Hunter’s Ride (AL2 3LY). It will be up throughout December. Please leave it there, it will be removed on the same basis as taking down Christmas lights!

My Story

I have always wanted to make a Christmas Postbox topper! And every year that I see these wonderful gifts of merry Christmas cheer, I find myself too busy with it being a busy time of year as a maker to create one. That didn’t stop me from designing one in my head many times over!!!

Finally this year, I managed to make the time to not only make my first one but it is also a first for my little village Bricket Wood in St Albans. I technically started it on Boxing Day 2021 and have dipped into the project on and off to get it completed in time for December 2022.

Your Guide to Macrame Fringe and Tassel Work

Types of fringe

There are different types of textures you can create with different techniques of making a fringe. In this class, I will teach you how to make 3 different types:

Twisted cord fringe
Crinkly unravelled cord fringe
Brushed out smooth fringe

Materials

The cord used is 100% cotton cord, this can be 3ply twisted cord or braided cord. If you are only intending on making the third type of fringe which is brushed out, a single ply cotton cord will save you a lot of time!

How do I make a tassel?

To make the best tassel, a fluffy brushed out cotton look appears the best when it is plump and full. This means using thick cotton (I used 9mm single twist cord for this one) or to use multiple measured cords to pad out the thickness of your tassel.

I will show you how to make a tassel using a very small wrapping knot in this class. You are welcome to add as many tassels as you wish to your own projects, the more the merrier.

Bow Holder Organiser Tutorial

Today I am sharing a tutorial on a macrame storage solution that I have been making for a few years now, ever since I decided there had to be a better way of organising my daughters hair accessories that clogged up the drawers. Organising all those hair bow accessories brings all kinds of OCD calm with a bit of colour coding and matching pairs.

This tutorial can be adapted to any ring work but is demonstrated on laser cut wooden templates with two circle rings.

Mini Macrame Wall Hanging Pattern

Let me take you through this step by step pattern on how to make a mini macrame wall hanging.

Making your own macrame wall hanging can sometimes be an intimidating project to start due to the size and amount of material required. Despite the complexity of some wall hangings, these projects give you the opportunity to play around with combinations of knots you know to create different patterns, depth and texture.

This mini wall hanging is a great place to start for beginners who want to try a wall hanging for the first time. Then you can build up towards larger wall hangings where you can have so much creative play!!!

Materials:

1 x wooden dowel (Aprox. 15cm)
24meters of 3mm cotton cord (944inches)
- 15 x 160cm cords (62.9inches)
- use an off cut from the trimmed tassel to make a small handle

Activities Week Macrame at School

Activities week is an enriching time for the students at Belmont Mill Hill Prep School London full of lots of exciting activities that I have been a part of now for a few years.

Macrame this year we have been making mini air plant hangers and every one of my students has been given the responsibility of looking after their own living air plant! YES students! They are not artificial and need your TLC.

Take a look at some of their amazing creations and there are a few reminders on air plant basics for my students incase they need a care reminder.

Teaching Macrame

Macrame is a mindful craft on a carousel of Future Skills Classes taught at Belmont to children in Year 3 to Year 8. I have been teaching these enthusiastic children there for over 3 years now in person and even through lockdown on google classrooms. The beauty of this class is how therapeutic the children find this craft which can often inspire young creators to pick up the craft as a hobby in their own free time.

Macrame classes are focused on learning basic macrame knots and then the students using these to create their own inspired art. Autonomy is given to the children to freestyle their own designs and adapt creations as well as helping to inspire me to try new experiments.

So many beautiful air plant hangers were made today by these creative young students, including complimentary day and night plant hangers for their new air plant babies.

Air Plant Care Basics:

A gentle reminder for students about how to care for your little babies that you took home to live in your new air plant hanger creations you made!

These plants do not need soil
Water them about once a week
- let them soak for about 10mins in a bowl of water and then take them out
- mimic how they would get drenched and then dry out in the wild!
They can go a period of time without water but will die hard if they’re in water too long!
You can mist them with a water sprayer instead and/or in-between watering too for increased humidity around them
They still need sunlight
- But avoid a direct sunlight all day long window otherwise they will burn out quickly!
Be gentle with their leaves

3 Super Easy DIY Bookmark Patterns for Macrame Beginners

Easy beginners macrame projects start with basic knots. Basic knots which are absolutely essential and classic knots being used by the most advanced macrame artists. If you can play around with the basic knots, you will be knotting these with your eyes closed or more realistically whilst chilling watching Netflix!

That ability to be able to immerse your mind into a focussed activity like crafting is so healthy for your mind! It releases happy hormones (dopamine) in your brain which helps reduce stress and makes you feel happy when you get that sense of accomplishment! So if you need a bit of mindful crafting, or someone else you know needs it, give this one a try.

These 3 patterns are all based on the classic macrame knot called a Square Knot. Start with design one if you have not done any macrame before and then move your way along the other patterns for increased complexity and to challenge yourself a little more. Make it fun and play with different colours or materials too.

Double Macrame Shelf Pattern – 2 tier

Why not save on space and make a double hanging shelf plant holder? I just can’t get enough of these gorgeous real wood log slices so I put two together and make this 2 tier macrame hanging shelf. They have been a great hit for those looking for rustic boho decor additions to their home, a great touch to a living room or bedroom.

Now I am bringing you the tutorial on how to make these bad boys. If you haven’t done many macrame projects before, don’t worry, the tutorial will take you through every knot you need to know how to make this. Although it is larger than most other basic macrame patterns for beginners, it doesn’t include any difficult advance knots so it is easy to make this simple pattern.

Along with the last macrame shelf design that I posted, this also suspends from the ceiling. They’re easy to hang but if you are not sure and want me to show different ways to hang them and how to securely attach them so they can bear weight of multiple plant pots drop me a comment here or on my Youtube Channel and I can make a short video on this.

Easy DIY Macrame Hanging Shelf Tutorial

The natural beauty of a real wood log slice holding some lush green indoor plants in the corner of your living room is the perfect boho home decor addition.

I will be taking you through a series of different types of macrame hanging shelves as they are wonderful as a space saving idea in your home and there are many different ways to hang them. This one suspends from the ceiling but don’t worry if you are someone who can’t get your head around how to get hooks in your ceiling or are worried about how to hang it.
